About John Bowman

John Bowman is a 1999 graduate of Leadership San Jose, the intensive Chamber of Commerce program designed to develop community leaders.

Mr. Bowman most recently served as executive editor of the San Mateo County Times. Until April 2007, he was editor of The Daily Review in Hayward for 2-1/2 years and before that served as managing editor of the San Mateo County Times. He has been a professional journalist for 31 years.

In 1978, Mr. Bowman conceived and co-managed one of the first major computer journalism projects anywhere; the resulting 21-part series, “Justice On Trial,” which aired on WHAS-TV in Louisville, documented bias and disparate sentencing in the Jefferson County, Ky., criminal justice system and won a national Gavel Award Certificate of Merit from the American Bar Association. In February 1980, he testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations in Washington D.C., regarding the results of an investigation into consumer abuses in the funeral home industry. In 1982, he won a national Champion Media Award for Economic Understanding from Dartmouth College for a series on the high cost of health care. He has won numerous other regional and local awards for project editing, column writing and headline writing. In July 2007, he will receive either a first- or second-place award from CNPA for editorial writing.

He is the former editor of The Silicon Valley Business Journal and former executive editor of Electronic Business magazine, a monthly trade journal then based in San Jose.

Mr. Bowman is a 1976 graduate of Morehead State University. His career has been evenly divided between print and broadcast journalism. He remains the only journalist to report regularly on all four major network television affiliates in Louisville, Ky., his hometown. He and his family live in Almaden Valley.
